Side Sleeper Mattress Guide

In general, a side sleeper is designed to take up as little space as possible, and as such can be easily shifted into a corner of the room when not in use. As a result, most side sleeper models are quite small, often no more than a few inches wide. While side sleepers are very popular for several reasons, including a lower cost and great convenience, it's also important to know what to look for to determine if you're getting a quality product. While there are many excellent products available, here are some tips to help make the decision easier:

The first thing to consider is firmness. Side sleepers should not be too firm, since this can cause pressure points which may lead to back pain. Instead, the mattress should ideally be medium to firm. Not medium-soft, as that will create pressure points which may lead to pain in the morning. Good choices are usually found at around $1,100 for Queen and King, although the best sweet spot for quality and price is usually around the $1,300 mark for Queen and Kings size side sleeper mattresses, which are typically large enough to comfortably accommodate a King sized bed.

Another important feature to look for is thickness. Most side sleeper models are constructed from at least three layers of foam. The foam is spread out over several large sheets, or layers, of foam. Each of the individual sheets of foam is then compressed together with means such as by rollers or by vacuum forming. The mattress layers may be made of several densities, but all will be fairly similar in firmness.

Foam layers are important, because they add extra support to your body. A side sleeper mattress  generally has a single density (density) of foam. If you get a mattress with two densities of foam, it's possible that you'll have more side "bounce" than you'd like. The more dense the layer of foam, the less "bounce" you'll experience. And generally, the softer the layer, the more "bounce" you will experience.

Another important feature to look for in your top layer of memory foam mattress is firmness. In order to decide if you're getting a good night's sleep, you must make sure that your top layer does indeed provide "cushioning". A side sleeper mattress generally has a very flat top. This flat top is a result of your lower body weight pressed against the mattress as you sleep. If you get a mattress with a high density top layer, but a low bottom layer, you'll find that you may experience some sagging, even though the top is still fairly flat. Most side sleeper models offer a hybrid of memory foam and a soft cotton cover. While a good number of these hybrid models are excellent, many consumers report that a good, all-foam bed will generally be more comfortable. And, given the extra cost associated with a good hybrid model, it may make more sense to go with a regular all-foam bed instead. Either way, it's important to choose a top and a base layer of foam with similar densities. Your final selection should include a layer of a cushion, whether an all-foam bed or just a regular mattress.
